Some information about the new Alumni pin
A trio of alumni from the class of 1971—Pete Jensen, Barry Zucker, and Tom Clarke—has worked over the last several months with enthusiastic members of the current Glee Club Executive Council, especially Dan Comito, to try to capture the energy and support of all alumni of the Rutgers University Glee Club. To that end, a new Rutgers University Glee Club Alumni pin is now available to all men who sang with the Glee Club during their years “on the banks.”
The pin design was established following the exchange of many e-mails and several meetings. The final pin, depicted on this page, is ¾ inch in diameter and suitable for wearing on a sport or suit coat lapel, as a tie tack, as a collar pin, or as a keepsake to be specially displayed.
The design features a prominent red “Block R,” the 21st century Rutgers spirit mark, and also features the “Q Clef” which has been for generations the symbol and logo of the Rutgers University Glee Club. The combination of the traditional and the new reflects the role of the Glee Club men of Rutgers and their dynamic leader, Dr. Patrick Gardner. Under Dr. Gardner’s leadership, the club carries on the singing traditions of the 19th century singing and mandolin societies, which were the origin of the today’s Glee Club. They do so with Rutgers songs, drinking songs and other “glees.” At the same time the Glee Club sings works of prominent 21st century composers including William Bolcom, Jennifer Higdon, and Stephen Sametz, and outstanding arrangers such as Susan Gardner, as well as performing other pieces of modern music.
The new cloisonné alumnus pin is available to all Glee Club alumni for a suggested donation of $25. The pins will be distributed for the first time at the August 23, 2009 picnic in a ceremony at Johnson Park near the University. If you cannot make that event, your pin can be sent to you following the picnic.
All graduating Glee Club members starting with the class of 2009 receive their pins for free, courtesy of the Rutgers University Glee Club Alumni Association. The money donated by Alumni for these pins will be transferred to the Glee Club’s general fund to be used for future tours, and other appropriate expenses. It is up to the Glee Club itself through its Executive Council, Dr. Gardner, and their advisor, Dr. Gillett, to address how the funds are to be utilized.
The design of this pin also may be used in the future on supporter and patron pins, shirts, sweatshirts, and other items to help fund the Glee Club’s many activities.
Per the order form, Pete Jensen is our money collector for all pin orders. Please send your check in the sum of $25 made out to the Rutgers University Glee Club Alumni Association (RUGCAA) at the address indicated on the form, so you can very soon display your Rutgers University Glee Club pride.
